Osteomalacia Symptoms & Causes due to Nutritional Deficiency
Osteomalacia is the term used for soft bones that arise from a defect in the bone-building process, due to poor bone mineralization. In children, it is known as rickets. Osteomalacia in adults is usually a milder form than in children, and is sometimes called adult rickets.
The most common cause of osteomalacia is deficiency of certain nutrients in the diet. Sufficient intake of these nutrients can help in osteomalacia treatment or prevention.
A good quality bone protection supplement may also help as a preventive measure to address the nutritional causes of osteomalacia.
What nutrient deficiencies can lead to osteomalacia :
DIETARY ELEMENT | DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS | FOODS |
Vitamin D
More on Vitamin D
Lack of vitamin D is one of the main causes of
osteomalacia, as vitamin D deficiency can lead to inadequate calcium in bones, giving rise to osteomalacia symptoms that include weak soft bones that are prone to fractures, muscular weakness, weak legs, and even limb deformities such as bow legs or spine deformities like a curved spine.
Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Vitamin D : |
rickets which causes soft bones, skeletal deformities or retarded growth in children |
muscle or bone pain (including low back pain) |
frequent bone fractures |
osteoporosis |
higher risk of periodontal disease in adults over 50 years old |
rheumatoid arthritis |
increased risk of diabetes due to insufficient insulin produced |
increased risk of high blood pressure |
leads to hypocalcemia (low blood calcium level) characterized by muscle cramps, twitching nerves or muscles, numbness and tingling of fingers and toes, irregular heart contractions, and irritability |
Foods high in vitamin D that may help in osteomalacia treatment include
· fish liver oils · mackerel · salmon, especially sockeye salmon · sardine · shrimp.
Calcium
More on Calcium
Calcium deficiency is one of the most well-known causes of
osteomalacia (adult rickets) due to inadequate calcium in bones, that results in soft bones prone to fractures; osteomalacia symptoms include muscular weakness, spine deformities, limb deformities, and rheumatic or arthritic-like bone pain especially hip bone pain.
Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Calcium : |
osteoporosis characterized by brittle, porous bones and frequent bone fractures |
impaired bone mineralization which, in children, can cause rickets (bone softening) which may lead to bone deformities, fractures, or stunted growth |
loss of bone mineralization in the jaw |
tooth decay or periodontal disease |
higher levels of lead in bones and teeth |
brittle or misshapened nails |
rheumatoid arthritis that leads to joint swelling and pain |
heart palpitations or abnormal heart rhythms |
risk of hypertension (high blood pressure) |
higher cholesterol levels |
insomnia |
lethargy or chronic fatigue |
poor appetite |
severe deficiency can cause spasmodic contractions of skeletal muscles, symptomized by tingling fingers, toes or lips, numbness in arms or legs, and muscle pain or severe muscular cramps or spasms |
Calcium rich foods that may help in osteomalacia treatment include
· fresh dark green vegetables like collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, spinach, turnip greens, wing beans · dairy foods such as buttermilk, mozzarella cheese, raw (non-pasteurized) milk, whey, yoghurt · goat's milk · soft bones of wild salmon, sardines, tuna, and anchovies are good sources of calcium that is easily absorbed by the body.

Phosphorus
More on Phosphorus
Phosphorus deficiency is one of the causes of
osteomalacia (adult rickets) symptomized by soft bones prone to fractures, muscular weakness, weak legs, limb deformities, spine deformities, and rheumatic or arthritic-like bone pain especially hip bone pain.
Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Phosphorus : |
poor bone formation and growth |
rickets (bone softening) in children characterized by knock knees, bowed legs, narrowed chest, or spinal curvature |
numbness and tingling of the extremities (hands and feet) |
difficulty walking |
increased susceptibility to infection |
fatigue or muscle weakness |
anemia |
loss of appetite and changes to weight |
Foods high in phosphorus that may prevent or alleviate osteomalacia symptoms include
· cheese · milk · meat · legumes (adzuki beans, chickpeas or garbanzo beans, yellow beans, lentils) · whole grains (wheat, oats, millet, quinoa, brown rice, corn, rye).
