Symptom :

osteomalacia

Other Terms :

Adult Rickets, Soft Bones

Osteomalacia Symptoms & Causes due to Nutritional Deficiency

Osteomalacia is the term used for soft bones that arise from a defect in the bone-building process, due to poor bone mineralization.  In children, it is known as rickets.  Osteomalacia in adults is usually a milder form than in children, and is sometimes called adult rickets.

The most common cause of osteomalacia is deficiency of certain nutrients in the diet.  Sufficient intake of these nutrients can help in osteomalacia treatment or prevention.

A good quality bone protection supplement may also help as a preventive measure to address the nutritional causes of osteomalacia.

What nutrient deficiencies can lead to osteomalacia :
DIETARY ELEMENT | DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS | FOODS
Vitamin D   |   More on Vitamin D
Lack of vitamin D is one of the main causes of osteomalacia, as vitamin D deficiency can lead to inadequate calcium in bones, giving rise to osteomalacia symptoms that include weak soft bones that are prone to fractures, muscular weakness, weak legs, and even limb deformities such as bow legs or spine deformities like a curved spine.

Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Vitamin D :
VD.01 Deficiency symptoms for Vitamin-D-bone-osteomalacia rickets which causes soft bones, skeletal deformities or retarded growth in children
VD.03 Deficiency symptoms for Vitamin-D-bone-osteomalacia muscle or bone pain (including low back pain)
VD.04 Deficiency symptoms for Vitamin-D-bone-osteomalacia frequent bone fractures
VD.05 Deficiency symptoms for Vitamin-D-bone-osteomalacia osteoporosis
VD.06 Deficiency symptoms for Vitamin-D-bone-osteomalacia higher risk of periodontal disease in adults over 50 years old
VD.07 Deficiency symptoms for Vitamin-D-bone-osteomalacia rheumatoid arthritis
VD.08 Deficiency symptoms for Vitamin-D-bone-osteomalacia increased risk of diabetes due to insufficient insulin produced
VD.09 Deficiency symptoms for Vitamin-D-bone-osteomalacia increased risk of high blood pressure
VD.10 Deficiency symptoms for Vitamin-D-bone-osteomalacia leads to hypocalcemia (low blood calcium level) characterized by muscle cramps, twitching nerves or muscles, numbness and tingling of fingers and toes, irregular heart contractions, and irritability

Foods high in vitamin D that may help in osteomalacia treatment include · fish liver oils · mackerel · salmon, especially sockeye salmon · sardine · shrimp.

Calcium   |   More on Calcium
Calcium deficiency is one of the most well-known causes of osteomalacia (adult rickets) due to inadequate calcium in bones, that results in soft bones prone to fractures; osteomalacia symptoms include muscular weakness, spine deformities, limb deformities, and rheumatic or arthritic-like bone pain especially hip bone pain.

Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Calcium :
Ca.01 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia osteoporosis characterized by brittle, porous bones and frequent bone fractures
Ca.02 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia impaired bone mineralization which, in children, can cause rickets (bone softening) which may lead to bone deformities, fractures, or stunted growth
Ca.04 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia loss of bone mineralization in the jaw
Ca.05 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia tooth decay or periodontal disease
Ca.06 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia higher levels of lead in bones and teeth
Ca.07 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia brittle or misshapened nails
Ca.08 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia rheumatoid arthritis that leads to joint swelling and pain
Ca.09 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia heart palpitations or abnormal heart rhythms
Ca.10 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia risk of hypertension (high blood pressure)
Ca.11 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia higher cholesterol levels
Ca.12 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia insomnia
Ca.13 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia lethargy or chronic fatigue
Ca.14 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia poor appetite
Ca.15 Deficiency symptoms for Calcium-bone-osteomalacia severe deficiency can cause spasmodic contractions of skeletal muscles, symptomized by tingling fingers, toes or lips, numbness in arms or legs, and muscle pain or severe muscular cramps or spasms

Calcium rich foods that may help in osteomalacia treatment include · fresh dark green vegetables like collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, spinach, turnip greens, wing beans · dairy foods such as buttermilk, mozzarella cheese, raw (non-pasteurized) milk, whey, yoghurt · goat's milk · soft bones of wild salmon, sardines, tuna, and anchovies are good sources of calcium that is easily absorbed by the body.

Phosphorus   |   More on Phosphorus
Phosphorus deficiency is one of the causes of osteomalacia (adult rickets) symptomized by soft bones prone to fractures, muscular weakness, weak legs, limb deformities, spine deformities, and rheumatic or arthritic-like bone pain especially hip bone pain.

Other symptoms that may indicate deficiency of Phosphorus :
P.01 Deficiency symptoms for Phosphorus-bone-osteomalacia poor bone formation and growth
P.02 Deficiency symptoms for Phosphorus-bone-osteomalacia rickets (bone softening) in children characterized by knock knees, bowed legs, narrowed chest, or spinal curvature
P.04 Deficiency symptoms for Phosphorus-bone-osteomalacia numbness and tingling of the extremities (hands and feet)
P.05 Deficiency symptoms for Phosphorus-bone-osteomalacia difficulty walking
P.06 Deficiency symptoms for Phosphorus-bone-osteomalacia increased susceptibility to infection
P.07 Deficiency symptoms for Phosphorus-bone-osteomalacia fatigue or muscle weakness
P.08 Deficiency symptoms for Phosphorus-bone-osteomalacia anemia
P.09 Deficiency symptoms for Phosphorus-bone-osteomalacia loss of appetite and changes to weight

Foods high in phosphorus that may prevent or alleviate osteomalacia symptoms include · cheese · milk · meat · legumes (adzuki beans, chickpeas or garbanzo beans, yellow beans, lentils) · whole grains (wheat, oats, millet, quinoa, brown rice, corn, rye).
