What
Vitamin Deficiency Causes Rickets
Rickets in children
is usually due to deficiency of one, or a
combination of nutrients. Knowing what vitamin deficiency causes
rickets, and the foods that supply these necessary dietary elements,
can help in the prevention of rickets in children, and also help
breastfeeding mothers reduce the risk of rickets disease in their babies.
What nutrient deficiencies can lead to rickets :

DIETARY
ELEMENT | DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS | FOODS |
Vitamin
D |
More on Vitamin
D
Deficiency
of vitamin D is well-known to cause rickets in children; rickets
symptoms include bones softening and becoming so pliable that they
bend, resulting in skeletal problems such as knock knees, bow legged
legs, curved spine, contracted pelvis, abnormally enlarged head, soft
skull bones and increased joint space; the breastbone may be
misshapened, causing the chest to be sunken and leading to breathing
difficulties.
How to prevent rickets
disease caused by Vitamin D deficiency :
Take foods high in vitamin D such as ·
fish liver oils ·
mackerel · salmon, especially sockeye salmon ·
sardine · shrimp.

Calcium

More on Calcium
Calcium
deficiency is also known to lead to impaired bone mineralization which,
in children, can cause rickets (symptoms include bones that become so
soft and pliable that they bend, resulting in skeletal problems such as
curved spine, knock knees, bow legged legs, enlarged ankles and wrists,
narrowed chest, contracted pelvis, bulging forehead, soft skull bones
and increased joint space).
How to prevent rickets
caused by Calcium deficiency :
Take calcium-rich foods such as ·
fresh dark green vegetables
like collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, spinach, turnip
greens, wing beans · dairy foods such as
buttermilk, mozzarella cheese, raw (non-pasteurized) milk, whey,
yoghurt · goat's milk ·
soft bones of wild salmon, sardines, tuna, and anchovies are good
sources of calcium that is easily absorbed by the body.

Phosphorus
|
More on Phosphorus
Deficiency
of phosphorus can lead to impaired bone mineralization that causes
rickets in children (symptoms are softening of bones that result in
skeletal problems such as curved spine, knock knees, bow legged legs,
narrowed chest, and soft skull bones).
How to prevent rickets
disease caused by Phosphorus deficiency :
Take foods containing phosphorus such as ·
cheese ·
milk · meat · legumes
(adzuki beans, chickpeas or garbanzo beans, yellow beans, lentils) ·
whole grains (wheat, oats, millet, quinoa, brown rice, corn, rye).
